Genital Warts: Can we have unprotected, monogamous sex?

Q: Noah: My girlfriend and are committed to each other and we want to spend the rest of our lives together. The doctor told me that I have genital warts. My girlfriend is getting tested. Can my girlfriend and I keep this disease under control with proper medical treatment and by using a condom when we have sex?

A: Dr. Dean: The warts need to be treated. When they go away, you can consider having unprotected monogamous sex, but until then, keep the protection.

There are just some things you can't eliminate to make your life risk free. One of the advantages of a faithful marriage is not worrying about using latex. Until you're at that point, though, use protection, especially if you haven't gotten a clear diagnosis from the doctors yet.

Dean Edell, M.D.
